Default AC Compressor Question

My vette is a 78 and the AC compressor doesn't even kick on. When I used a jumper wire on the low pressure switch (that I learned on this forum!), it kicked right on. I can feel cool, not cold, air blowing out.

Does this mean that the compressor is actually ok and it only needs charged? If so, should I have it converted to R34?

Thank you again.

Brian

I guess I mean R134. Not R34.

The fact that the compressor kicked on means that the compressor is fine. I would have the system pressure checked to make sure that you don't have a clogged orifice tube. If the system is indeed empty, have it accumulator evacuated and then retrofit the system and fill with R134a.

If the compressor kicked on it doesnt mean that its OK, it only means the clutch is engaging. If that system was down for a long period of time, I would (at least) get the system fully flushed, changed all the O-rings, get it retrofitted with R134a then change the orifice filter. Make sure you do a vacuum discharge for at least 30 min before charging with R134a.

If the comp comes on then you probably have a bad low pressure switch or,,,,as in my case the connection was bad.
