Default Starting Issues

I was hoping anyone could give me some suggestions on my problem. Here it is: first it is a 1981 Vette. When I turn the key to fire up the engine it some times does nothing or makes a clicking sound, then it starts. I put a set of jumper cables on and it starts right away. The previous owner put an alarm system on with remote door locks. (he thinks this has something to do with it) I am thinking it may be a starter issue or solenoid problem. I am also going to put a new battery to see if this helps.

thanks guys

sounds like the alarm is draining the battery while it sits.

unhook the alarm

alot of alarms install an Ignition switch relay,
which opens the starter circuit, if so you will have to figure that relay out. look for Purple wires,

Default starting problems

Start with the battery...how old...etc...it may have just have aquired a bad cell...as these cars do sit for long durations between drives. Then go from there.....

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. The battery is about 1 year old but I don't think it is a great one, plus the car did sit quit a bit with the previous owner.

thanks

get a decent battery and your alarm system will not make that much difference as long as you use the car a few times a month, to keep the battery charged.

If you leave the car store for a long time in a garage, I would suggest a battery cut off switch.
