Default Chrome repair

Any body try silver leaf to restore side grilles of a 72 (70 71) instead of re-chrome. Or for that matter to restore chrome.

Never tried silver leaf.

Some things I've thought of but haven't done yet:

1) Chrome vaporization. If plastic parts can be chrome plated with a metal vaporization process, you'd think the polished aluminum of the grills could be also. (My 70 grills have had the chrome/nickel/copper plating removed to strip them to bare aluminum. They've been polished and the polished aluminum looks reasonably good). I did find a metal vaporization shop that tentatively agreed if I brought the parts in for evaluation. Haven't got around to that yet.

2) I was reading in a RC model airplane magazine about paints that modelers use to simulate polished metal surfaces. There are chrome paints for sale that are targeted for the model airplane market. The paints are really expensive. The magazine I was reading was an English/European magazine, so these paints should be available where you live. The metal particles in the paint are microscopically small and are flat. When dry, the particles line up horizontally producing a mirror like sheen. I sometimes buy model airplane magazines just to read about the creative processes they used to make detailed miniature parts.
