The weight shouldn't be a problem....but it's pretty scary to send something like that across the country when others will be tossing it around. UPS or Fed Ex should be able to do it ( i would think)
I'll bet a window/ glass company will have the perfect box with all the padding for you as well...
Depends on the condition you want it to arrive in I guess. I would have it crated and shipped by a professional crating/shipping outfit, albeit this may be a bit costly for you, as I think it was about $300.00 to pick it up, crate and then ship the one I bought from David in Folsom, CA to me here in Vancouver, Canada, but it arrived intact and I was very happy with the service provided. Here is the link of the original transaction and shipping company perhaps they can help by suggesting a crating and shipping company near you if you decide that route.
I baught my hardtop from a guy in Nebraska thru that auction site.
For shipping, there is a site called www.uship.com, where you can put out a request for quotes, and shippers will send you quotes.
A lot of these shippers, are ordinary people making some extra cash. I accepted a quote from a guy (I think he lives in Iowa) for $350 to deliver it from Nebraska, to me in Austin Texas.
He had a minivan with the rear seats out, and had the hardtop wrapped in a blanket, this thing was perfectly safe.
It may have been a bit expensive, but I figured it was Ok for the piece of mind.
I recall my hardtop costing about 350 to ship through yellow. It came fron the midwest somewhere but that was long ago. Nice thing about carriers like that is you can save a bit by picking it up at a terminal verses door to door delivery.
Shipped a C4 hardtop Chicago to Florida a few years ago. Dropped it off at a trucking company and the guy in Florida picked it up at their terminal. About $300 dock to dock.
BUT....I spent about $60 for plywood and 2X2s to build a crate for it. Mounted the top by it's normal mounting locations to 2 2X4s and then built the crate around it. Suspended inside without touching the sides. Wasn't covered or bubble wrapped or anything.
I am in construction so building the crate was simple.
It absolutely will have to be in a crate of some sort, the better the crate, the less chance of damage. It won't be able to ride on a UPS or Fedex package truck, they don't deliver crates. I have heard of shipping large items on a Greyhound bus, but have no experience with that. You might want to give them a call. As others have suggested, dropping it off at a shipping terminal and having the recipient pick it up there is a good option.
