I'm sure this subject has been well discussed, unfortunately my "search" skills are a bit lacking.
In talking with a friend of mine (mechanic) he suggested changing out the four speed close ratio tranny on my '74 for a 5 speed circa pre - 1993 Camaro unit. The objective is for a lower RPM @ cruising speed.
Anyone that can point me to a previous thread(s), I'd be most appreciative.
Swapping to a 5 speed has been covered at length all over here. I don't know about specifically a pre 93 Camaro 5 spd, but do a search and you'll have all the reading material you could ever want.

Yeah, probably more that you want is right
Go to the tech forum and click on the box that says "search this forum". type in a key word.
take a look at these guys http://www.keislerauto.com/ Several people on here have done the swap using their transmission. They make a complete kit for the swap.
Pre 1993 Camaros had Borg Warner T5 transmissions and ONLY behind the 305 motor so you should think carefully before doing a T5 swap if you have decent power (best 305 was a 87 IROC 235HP most were 210-205HP.) Kiesler set-up with a 1310 series driveshaft is the best fit, the 1330 series U-joints get really CLOSE to floorboards in the driveshaft tunnel.

the very true best thing i ever did for my 72.
makes the 383 a hand full in the first three gears . 5 gear 2000 rpm is about 73 mph

You've got a higher rear end, I'm at 1800~1900 right there with a 0.64 overdrive. I can only lose control in my first gear on a turn -- but mine is only a 355.
Have 89 Camaro T5 in mine, had to fab a trans bracket because of the tilt, I also cut a stock shifter off at the base and weld a peice of black pipe as a job so the shifter comes out the stock 4 speed shifter hole. Probably the best upgrade I have made since I like to jump on the e-way when I want to get somewhere in hurry

I used a Toyota 5 speed trans (V6 2WD R150 $600) 0.82 OD, in new condition. Made a 3/4 inch steel adapter plate to fit my 4 speed bell housing machined a new bronze pilot bushing, installed a Toyota clutch plate, used the stock pressure plate and throw out bearing and forks that fit perfect to he Toyota throwout sleeve. I understand that there is an adapter avalable from Advanced Adapters. Then modified the trans mount and cut the drive shaft to for the Toyota rear yoke. The shifter was in the correct location just centered so I heated and bent the stock Toyota shifter to come out he stock location. I then cut off the Corvette shifter, machined a sleeve the slipped over the cut off Toyota shifter rod and the Corvette handle, pined them both and welded them together. The shift pattern plate I had acid etched a plate of stainless steel then polished the raised shift pattern and powder coated it black so It looks stock
