69' Vette

Anyway, look at the machined pad just in front of the passenger side head. It should have 2 numbers... one is an engine assembly code which includes the prefix, date and suffix, telling you the engine's application. Check these codes in the Back Book for correctness.
The other number is the VIN derivative which essentially determines whether the car is actually "numbers matching" or not (regardless of how many incorrect definitions you get for that term). If the VIN stamped on the pad matches (there's that word again) your car's body/chassis VIN, the car's numbers match. Transmission numbers can also match the VIN, but that's for another day. Other car numbers can be "correct" but they don't match anything.
You should also see if the trim tag codes (interior/ext colors) are correct for your car.
PS... it's a '69, not a 69'.
95% of people state that matching numbers are the engine stamp pad in front that has the correct VIN Derivative.. the other 5% say that matching numbers is all or some of what I stated above. They are the super collectors and the super authenticators and is what gets judged when submitting the car for judging...
Also, you might want to unbolt the car from the frame and lift the body up about 4 inches so you can see the VIN number stamped on the frame.
See what you have got yourself into? The question is, do you want to play the game?!
Good Luck..
