Default Transmission date code question

I am very confused about something. The engine # and transmission # both have the cars last 8 numbers of the VIN stamped as it should however when you look at the date code for the engine it is V030ICLR March 1st 1974. For what ever reason the 1 is actually stamped with an I (V030ICLR) my transmission has P4R17B which is October 17th 1974 the date on the trim tag is H12 March 12th The blue sticker on the drivers door is 3/74 March 1974 This car has been in the family since 1975 with No transmission replacement. Am I reading something wrong, how can the transmission be from October 74. In the book Chevrolet by the numbers it says the R is for October and the 4 stands for the model year. Could that mean the transmission was made in October 73 for the “model year” 74 Corvettes. The car was bought used with approximately 2200 miles on it in 1975. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

oddly enough, another forum member (frank vincent) and i have been having a conversation about my m20 transmission which is the original tranny but was actually made for a 73 car....

as the picture shows, the tranny was made 4 1/2 month before my build date on the car (which was November 5, 1973) my vin# is 08167...

he noticed the rarity and suggested that it was a carry over from '73 - basically the factory said find any left over muncys and use them before we start using the warners....

he also stated that this is why NCRS has a 6 month window....

Normal. Chevy frequently substituted 1's and I's, as well as 0's and O's.

Exactly. The 4 in the stamp is for the model year, so your transmission date stamp is October 17, 1973.
