My 80 vette was in the shop as it was leaking trany fluid. Mechanic replaced the trany dip stick seal. Wife picked up the vette, drove it home, and told me it didn't run properly.
Took the vette out, could not get it to go past 40km per hour and was reving 3000rpm. Any suggestions as to what is wrong?
OK...I'll take a stab based on the very limited info you've given us...
Since you're replacing the tranny fluid seal you must have an automatic. I'm guessing that the car is not shifting and is stuck in first or second gear because the mechanic who replaced the seal inadvertently disconnected the vacuum modulator on the side of the tranny where the seal is replaced. Check the modulator at the tranny and the point where the line that comes from it connects to the tree at the rear of the intake manifold. If you don't have good vac it won't shift correctly, if at all.
Is the fluid level in the tranny correct? This also will affect shifting.

Thanks in advance.
First, check what Wuttin pointed out. I had that problem once but it wouldn't even shift out of 1st.
If that's okay, check the fluid level. Make sure the engine is hot and running when you check the transmission fluid level.

Sounds like that mechanic fixed the dipstick on your car but turned out to be a a real "dip-stick" himself Just kiddin. I'll bet it's that vacuum line issue mentioned above - good call.
My '75 very slow in shifting and smoke coming out of mufflers. The $35 modulator was replaced and all is well. The line going from the manifold to the tranny is important - my modulator was not working properly and forced fluid back into the engine thus the smoke. So if you're having tranny problems check the simple things like the $35 modulator.
Talked to my mechanic quickly. Mentioned that he did not unplug the vacuum modulator. Mentioned that the throttle could be stuck.
It doesn't take much to disconnect it if the connections at either end of the line are weak...the rubber that attaches the line to the modulator and/or the intake can age and fail...just moving the line in the midst of doing the seal replacement could potentially break the vacuum. The tree on my intake had actually broken and there was a hair fracture that got worse and failed just by moving it around a little (I replaced the tree). At a minimum you would do well to get some porperly sized vacuum line and replace the connector pieces at each end of the transmission to intake vacuum line to at least rule them out. And based on his response unless I'm missing something I would also start looking for a new mechanic.
Just curious but what did you have to pay to get that seal replaced? It takes longer to get the car into the garage and onto the lift than it does to swap out the $2 part.

Haven't paid him yet. He's coming by the house to have a look.
agree with the above posts about the modulator. I replaced my dipstick tube on mine a couple of weeks ago and knocked the modulator line off several times, only way I noticed it was the hard line fell and hit the crossmember, it had gotten old and brittle. Replaced the hose between the hardline and the modulator and it stays on now. Still have the leak.....
