Default Rag Joint

With the help of Jim Shea I am going to re-use the parts from my steering coupler. I would like to replace just the rag joint. Mine is all frayed and brittle. Does anyone know where I can get just the rag joint and pins that hold the unit together? Also, I need the 12 point bolts that squeeze the coupler to the splines. Thanks guys, have a great weekend.

Duntov motors has them, as OEM pieces. all the after market ones i have seen (and had) are POS. I believe they are also still available from the dealer for about 70 something. don't use an aftermarket. http://www.duntovmotors.com/FrontSuspensionSteering.htm . Not sure Dontov still has OEM pieces or if they ran out and are selling aftermarket one now too. I would get mine from the dealer if I were you. C.

Thanks guys, but I am looking for just the "rag" part. I took the coupling apart and cleaned it up good. It looks fine, I just need the cushion piece that goes in between both halves. My old one kind of looks like hard rubber with steel wire in between.

If you are going to rebuild your flexible coupling and just replace the rubber disc, please use stop pins with shoulders to attach the disc to the steering gear flange and use shoulder bolts to attach the rubber disc to the column flange.

You should NEVER make a critical (like steering your car) connection by just using common bolts where you are compressing rubber. Even cotter pins, torque prevailing nuts, double nutting, locktite, etc is not sufficient for a secure connection.

You can get a kit with the rubber "cushion" at just about any auto parts store. The kits are pretty much junk. The OEM rag joint has a copper screen laminated to the rubber disk. Thats what makes your horn go beep. I don't think the disk in most of the ten dollar kits have that screen laminated to them.

Like the other posters said, buy a genuine OEM steering coupler. It will only run you between seventy and one hundred dollars depending on where you buy it. Thats really cheap compared to what can happen to you, or those around you on the road, if the coupler fails.
