Default Gas gauge issues on 76

I am having speratic trouble with my fuel gauge on my 76. Fuel gauge will peg out past full from time to time, then pop back to normal. Any ideas or inherited problems with the 76? Grounding would be my first guess, but any opinions out there? I hope I don't have to pull the tank to repair.

Hi Reddog76, my son has a 75 Stingray and we recently had some of the same types of symptoms you are describing. It all started when he replaced the antenna. It turned out that when we pulled the antenna wire into place, we almost totally pulled a connection into for the fuel gage that runs from the sending unit through the back of the rear wall in the trunk section. It was making contact some of the time and then wasn't part of the time causing intermittant function. You might take a flashlight and look up into the fender well on the drivers rear side of the car behind the rear tire and see if you can find any wires that looked to be partially connected. Also, while you are looking, make sure the ground wire is connected properly as well. Hope this helps.

Your gas gauge will go past full when the tan wire at the tank falls off.The same thing can happen when the wire is broken or making poor connection on the back of the dash gauge.
Check back at the tank first thats usually where the problem is.
