I am doing a restoration on my 74 corvette and although my radiator support shows no signs of rust on the outside, I noticed when I pulled it out I could hear rust flakes inside the support sounding like sand as I rotated the support. I would like to get that taken care of but don't know how to go about it.
i'm mulling over the same thing right now, i intially attempted tonight to cut the spot welds holding it together so I could take it apart and r&r the whole deal. Yeah right.....
so.....i'm thinking about cutting the bottom off and welding some flat steel on that is apprx the same dimensions. The top half of my support is in good shape and you can't see the bottom right?
I had thought that if you can dip a car frame and it removes all the rust inside and out, that I could send off the support and do the same. Problem is I have no clue what that is called, or even if there is someone local or as least near by that can do that. I also thought about pouring Ospho inside it and then plug off the holes rotate is around a few times, pour that out then pour in an oil base paint plug again and rotate, pour out let dry maybe a week and recoat one more time, in order to incapsulate what ever is left. This idea would certianly be better that doing nothing. My support is very solid and as I said before had no signs of rust.
If it is solid on the outside, drill some good size drain holes,
and get all the stuff out, and evaluate the material,
if you decide the frame is still solid enough, POR 15 into the frame
and distribute it around real good.
DO NOT Get POR 15 on you ! or anything else, it won't come off.
good luck, 69VETT
