Default Por-20

Has anyone here used POR-20 as a finish for headers. A buddy of mine is working up a budget 496 build and doesnt want to pay the additional $300 or so bucks a jet hot coating might cost, but doesnt want just old (burnt off paint) on his headers.

POR-20 seems like a good alternative.

anybody have any history using it? photos even?

TIA

Here are my manifolds with POR20,
I have about 5-6 hours on the motor,
so far no discoloration.
Time will tell, ..... 69VETT
I have also used the Jet-Hot and highly recommend it.

POR-20 won't work on coated headers. It will flake off once heated. I used it on some Hooker headers and didn't like the resulting finish. You could still see brush strokes....unlike POR-15.

I'm about to try it on my manifolds for my 1967 Thunderbird project and am a bit leery but figure it's a safer place to test it. I have tried numerous POR products on various automotive and non-automotive applications with very mixed results. First you have to make sure you follow the directions very, VERY carefully or the product will fail prematurely. In some cases like rebuilding/repairing floorboards which are weakened it worked fabulously...on coating exterior brass lights on my house it worked really well for 3-4 years then failed. (went from brass to black lights after that one!).

On non heat related, restorative applications, I would opt for Eastwood's products over POR's. They are a lot less finicky and don't require the prep work or expense that POR's do. I did the ultimate rust test on my 1999 Expedition trailer-hitch with Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator and Chassis black. For prep, all I did was take a wire brush to knock off the loose rust and wipe it down with lacquer thinner. Sprayed it with the Rust Encapsulator, let it dry (I did not follow the instructions as I was in a hurry so I only let it dry for an hour or so) and resprayed it with Chassis Black. It's been over 7 years (maybe closer to 10) and the damn thing still looks perfect!!

I used it on a set of headers and it just flaked off, doesn't work on headers.i sand blasted and cleaned metal . When headers heat up ,that's when it will flake off.
