Default auto tranny kickdown adjustment help (1979)

please refer to pic below. car has edlbrock carb on it, not stock.
I currently have about 1/2" of travel before the carb linkage would start to pull this kick down linkage. Does this sound right? If not, how much should I have before the linkage is engaged?
ALso, I made my own stud off the carb, using a screw with 2 locking nuts, it seems to work fine

thanks

Looks like a TH350 cable. Adjust it by releasing the lock on the housing and pushing the housing aft thru the bracket. Then give it WOT by hand and lock it down. There are a couple of different styles of cable locks. One is a metal tab you press down and that lets the cable loose, the other is a plastic "horseshoe" that slips over the cable, The adjustment is the same, unlock, slide the cable housing aft, WOT, and lock.

My kickdown cable (79 L82 w TH350) also has play in the end of it. The end of the cable with the slide and the plastic sleeve seems to be springloaded itself. If I disconnect the cable from the carb and lightly pull on the end of the cable while the adjuster is still locked down, the end pulls out, stops, then lightly springs back if I let go. It will stay pulled back even when attached to the carb, but it can be pulled forward and released in the same way. Once it is fully engaged at WOT this is over-ridden since the entire cable is now pulled taut. I'm guessing that whatever springloading is intrinsic to the end of the cable it no longer is working on yours so it has gone slack. Alternatively, the stud on new carb may be farther back so the slide just sits in it's natural spot but leaves a gap (if this is the case I expect adjusting will not correct it). Regardless, this shouldn't afffect the kickdown as long as the cable is adjusted at WOT as detailed by Tim AT above.

Experts, please correct me if this is wrong but it seems logical based on my experience with my cable.

Good luck, Steve

That is correct- no reason for it to be tight against anything as long as it pulls far enough to cause the detent downshift
