I'm still building up the 76 I bought for my dad's retirement. I finally did the motor work and actually drove it!! The question I have is the Factory tach isn't working. I replaced the stock intake with an Edelbrock and the HEI is now an Accel unit. Am I missing something or is it more then just hooking up the tach wire to the dist? Thanks in advanced, Brian
Look on the old manifold see if you see what looks like a capacitor it is not it is a tach filter with two wires each end. One goes to the dist cap marked tach. The other goes to a brown wire by the accelerator cable
The tach filter is only there to filter out noise into the cabin, aka radio whine, etc. It will not effect the tach working or not unless it is inline and open/defective. You likely either have no signal going to the tach or a bad tach/tach board. Does the tach circuit board have any burnt spots on it? If so it probably has some bad components which MAY be able to be repaired.
Best suggestion at this point is connect a aftermarket tach or tach/dwell meter to the input of the factory tach under the dash and see if that works. If so time to investigate the factory tach further. If not then you need to figure out where the signal went.
If you do determine that the tach is defective, PM me for more info on possibly getting it repaired.
