Default Side Yoke Differences

Hey everyone, it's been a long time since I've posted anything but I've been so busy working on the vette, but still manage to read every day, all the great knowledge from the members of this forum.
Any way, here's my question. I resently rebuilt my differential, and I replaced the side yokes (for an auto trans.), and now the half shaft u joints are too big to fit the side yokes. I was wondering if the PO had put in all diff parts from a 4 speed rear end. Is there a difference in side yoke sizes between the two?
Do I need to get different side yokes, and if so, which ones? Or is there a different u joint out there that I could use? HELP!

Looks like their is a difference between manual and auto for 81. Seems strange, but napa says the auto takes the bigger u-joint cap at 1.188" and the manual takes the smaller at 1.106". You may have been sent the manual yokes by mistake. I hope this helps, or someone with better info will chime in.

Thanks Aktbird for your reply. I measured the cap diameter on the side yokes and they are 1.063, the half shaft cap diameter is 1.188. And of course the span is different on each of them.
I'm all ears if some one else has any insight as to what I've got here.

The span, or measurement across the caps should be 3.62" for both. If it's too much of a pain to get the right yokes, you may be able to get a u-joint with different size caps to adapt. Local parts store should be able to find one by the size.

Another thing to consider if you use the new yokes is, the straps are probably different too.

The span on the side yoke is 3.22, and the span on the half shaft is 3.62. Do they make heavy duty side yokes that would have been these sizes? (Being a cap size of 1.188 and a span of 3.622)
I had to replace the side yokes because one of the old yokes had cracked, and both had worn beyond reusing.

I did save all the straps and bolts so that shouldn't be a problem if I can find a different u joint.

If you send a PM to GTR1999, I'm sure he will have all the answers, he is the resident expert.
