I am putting new gauges in a recently purchased 1972 vette project car. I traced the black wire from the back of the gauge out to the engine bay. The wire is off of the sending unit in the block. If I am looking at it correctly it looks like this wire splits off the wiring harness along the fender and goes to the altenator where it then goes to the temp sending unit. I check the wire and it is hot.(electrically speaking)
Does this sound correct? Any help appreciated

The black from the back of the dash gage does not go out to the engine compartment.
The wire that goes to the sender in the block is dark green its easy to mistake for black.
I just reread your post and didnt address the 12 volts on the sender wire.If your using a voltmeter you will read around 12v but it is a sorta backfeed of 12v.(need one of our electrical engineers where's 69427?)If you are using a 12v buld type test light you will get a dim bulb.If your using an LED type test light you probably will get a bright light.
Light current on the sender wire is normal....but if you get a really bright light on a normal bulb type test light like I use as a standard then you have a problem.Hope this helps
