After hearing the grinding noise coming from the rear of my 1970 I had the spindles and bearings replaced - the bearings were so loose the spindle was rubbing on the rotor thus the noise. While there I also had the 1982 tranny that was in the car - put this in years ago as the original died - rebuilt and boy this car now goes like a rocket - if you put the pedal down about 2 inches passing gear kicks in and it goes. And because of the new 330hp new engine this car just clicks. I'm still a junior mechanic and for those like me here is what I've learned - when you press the pedal the carb will open up and the tranny will go in a lower gear to give you the "passing gear" - the tranny and engine must work together - example, the metal tube from the intake goes to the tranny for smooth tranny operation. If the modulator on the tranny is not working you will not have smooth operation - this is a $10-$30 part. Also, the tranny has lines running from the radiator bottom to cool the tranny. OK, most of you experts know this stuff but, this is for people that are still learning. By the way, I've used Tim Small Automotive in Jamestown, NC - near Greensboro and High Point - Yes, I endorse him as he is honest, does quality work at a good price.
I'm confused, were the bearings loose before or after they were installed? If before then just worn, if after then they were not installed correctly or suffered an impact.
Yoy really dont say what tranny you have in the car is it from 1982 is it a turbo 350/400 or a 4 speed ?If its a four speed overdrive you have the tv cable running the shifting on the Tranny if you have the 350 or the 400 they use the Modulator valve .Which do you have????
Sorry about that - the bearings were worn - that is when I would go around a corner the noise from the back sounded like going on a cobblestone drive - plus, when on a lift you grab the tires and can tell they were loose. New bearings/spindles were installed with the car on a lift - the TA was not taken off. Works great. The tranny in this 1970 came out of a 1982 - it is a automatic 700R4 with lockup converter. And, as I understand it, the passing gear only takes about an inch or two to work - compared to the earlier trannys where you had to mash the pedal down almost to the floor.
