Default Hooker Reverse Flow Mufflers

Hy Guys,

I installed the reverse flow tubes on my big block side exhaust and am not real happy with the sound or the amount of restriction they develop. Has anyone every stripped them apart and modified the mufflers to improve the sound and restriction qualities?

If so, I'd appreciate hearing what modifications you did.

Thanks
Ian

I used the max flows, as the other two types available are waaaaay too restrictive for my taste. The max flows arent too loud unless you really get on it.

My point is I paid $$$$ for all that horsepower and I dont want to lose it through my exhaust.

Have you ever heard the max flows? They have a 2 1/2" straight thru design.

I second that, ditch those reverse flows and get a pair of max flows or spirals. Those two seem to be the most popular with sidepipes.

I bought my vert with Hooker headers and sidepipes. Is there a way to tell the type of muffler ?

Thanks Stan,

I was afraid this would be solution. More money!!

I'll look into the max flows, spirals and the sweet thunder options.

If they not loud at all the are reverse flow. If they are a litlle loud they are the glasspack type. If they make everyone turn around in envy, they are the max-flows

I've got 'em on mine and really like the sound they produce.

I had the Max Flows for one day....made my ears bleed (I found them to be VERY loud...but nice sound). I have STS baffles and they are a good compromise.

Definately a good idea. Pick your favorite.

The good thing about max flows is that they are fairly inexpensive. About $180 pr from Summit Racing. That's what I liked the best about them. Great power, deep rumble and cheap price to boot!!!

I drilled my reverse flows: three 10mm holes at each end (inlet/outlet) gave at least a much better sound (darker, more grunt) and the butt-o-metre says some horses were freed too. Except for drilling holes, there isn't much you can do with hem except for drilling holes in the inner baffles too, but you'd need a really long drillbit for that (which I didn't have).

It seems that everyone who gets Hooker Sidepipes is at loss for which mufflers to choose. I was stuck between Max-Flows and the Spiral Baffles. After all the work and money put into ceramic coated sidepipes, I couldn't wait to hear it. Took it for a ride around my block, (I swear it's a 2 1/2 mile race course) with straight pipes just to hear it, and get a comparrison of sound with mufflers. I didn't want to wait much longer to cruise to the beach, and just ordered the max-flows because I get them in 1 day from summit. I was totally impressed and surprised how loud and nice they sounded. They have a really nice vintage glass-pack sound and grumble really loud at idle. You will definetly turn some heads with the max-flows, I gaurantee it!

I hope this doesn't turn you away, but I have set of 4 ricer car alarms driving by the beach....it was hilarious, but they are loud, and barely under the DB level for California

How can you tell which inserts you have? I purchased my side pipes used. They are made by Hooker. Sound is deep, not loud.

Thanks, Bill

I bought mine through Summit. They have an 1/78" inlet & outlet pipe offset for reverse flow. As stated byRRVette, "if your used pipes are not loud, most likely they are the reverse flows".

We are thinking of changing the tube diameters to 2 1/2" as an experiment. If that doesn't give us the right sound, then it will be the max flows or sweet thunders.

I heard the sweet thunder inserts sound great and are one of the cheapest ones out there. You should look into them as well

I run the "Sweet Thunder" inserts and they sound SWEET!
Not to detract from other opinions but I always get comments on how good my vette sounds.
And remember.....Chicks dig loud corvettes!
