center rear compartment tab ???

center rear compartment tab ???
i have a late 79 with the 3 hole compartment in back. the center one has a tab at the edge which looks like it was or is suppoed to be used for a switch / light like in the glove box. is there a reason for this tab? i was thinking of wiring up a switch that would turn on a small led for night use.
