Ok so I took off the sending unit from 74, cleaned it and put it back on.. all other components of fuel system where replaced and cleaned and in working order.. Drove it a couple of minutes and everything died on me..
Then i figured out you could take the strainer off the stupid sending unit and saw the catastrophe inside of it..
So I cleaned the almost rubberized pellets of gas out of the filters, lines and everything else, replaced the strainer and cleaned everything again... Still not getting gas to carb..
I noticed that the gas line that I used to connect the fuel pump to the fuel line is kinked up pretty bad and I suspect it. Should I clean out the fuel pump too or just order the specialty "S" hose?
For bonus points, are the individual letters spelling "Corvette" on the bumper common on sites like ebay or craigslist or on C3 parts forum? I'm really not looking forward to paying $100 for 8 letters that look like they should be on my mailbox...
I'd replace that line from the frame to the pump- if the rest of the fuel system was nasty, it's gonna' be nasty too. If you had junk in the carb filter chances are real good it's in the pump too. while you have the lines off at the tank and at the pump, it would be a good time to blast the steel line out with air.
And for the bonus points-
74 letters are probably different that other years because of the split bumper. I haven't got there with my 74 yet. I'm in the middle of replacing wiring harnesses and figuring out if I'm going to use a hot 355 or a vanilla 350.
Gah I know there'll be dirt in that pump.. Thanks for the bonus though. Think that they used individual lettering for those couple years because of the bumper models used.. Unfortunately for me the original letters probably went the way of the urethane bumper they where attached too.
