I would lower the column down and lower the speedo-tach cluster and replace the speaker.I would also remove ALL the dash screws from door to door(except the 2 inside pass door jamb)to give plenty of flexibility.(zip,zip,zip and 2 min later they are all out)
Some will remove the top dash.....that can open a real can of worms.

If you crack the upper dsah you have made a $300 mistake. But it can be done without incident with a little care and modest heat from a hair dryer to allow a little flex on removal. Don't you love that old 10-ohm speaker in the pic?
