Default OT-Rust-Free Wheel Weights?

We had ~3" of snow last night so it is time to have the snow tires put on my daily driver (2007 Impala). I have four Goodyear Nordic tires mounted on GM steel wheels. But last winter the wheel weight clamps rusted. Are there rust-free weights for steel wheels? And should a GM dealer have them?

The alloy wheels and all-season tires will be stored for the winter. As is the 1974 Corvette now, of course.

Call your dealer or your tire provider.

I wanted to go in with some knowledge. The Service Advisors can be less than accommodating at times but if you know what you want, you generally get it. The power of suggestion works wonders. If they do not have it they know where to find it.

I just had new tires put on my 04 Z71 Tahoe. These are 17inch aluminum wheels though, not steel. The weights they used were coated with some light blue-gray epoxy looking stuff, so possibly rust free type.

These werent the invisible stick on inside the rim weights, but the outer rim, clamp-on type.

Not sure if this helps........

Thanks! I'll ask for those. I thought there might be a special type for alloy wheels that can be used on steel as well.

Paul, you can just go to NAPA and buy the lead stick-ons by the box. They come in strips with markings down to about 1/4 ounce. If the wheel is clean where you're going to affix them they should stick very well. I keep a box on hand as my wheel guy doesn't always have them so I take my own weights with me to be sure.

On a side note, I noticed on our '06 ZO-6 it has a different style of weight that doesn't look like they're lead. They are individual weights that are no more than a half ounce each. I don't know if GM dealers carry them, or if they're just used when the factory wheels are mounted and balanced.

Good luck... GUSTO

Maybe have them mounted on the inside of the rim, Out of site out of mind.

Lead wheel weights may soon be a rarity. With lead being eliminated from just about everything, I suspect wheel weights won't be far behind. The wheel weights on my truck are rusting. No doubt they are steel and not lead.

We shall see. Because of that 3-4" of snow the GM dealer is backed up on appointments until November 3. I did hit the weights with POR-15 and I may just leave it at that. They look OK.

FYI, our neighbouring Province (Quebec) just a few miles away has mandated snow/winter tires beginning November 1. There is a fine for not using them. Needless to say this has resulted in a rush for new tires and service on this side of the border as well although the law was announced many months ago. Carly Simon's "Procrastination" comes to mind.

I seem to remember steel clamp on weights that had a grey almost semi gloss finish to them when I worked at a gas station when I was a kid not sure if they are around anymore

I just left it with POR-15. They are now on the four corners courtesy of the local GM dealer for $27.00. Those are Goodyear Nordics. 3M tire preservative should keep things decent until the salt hits. I hope the coming winter won't be like the last! It was brutal!

Why do people slow down around me?
