Transmition Rebuild
I have the trans out of my 71 (4-speed) and was wonder how much it should cost to have it rebuilt?
I have basic mechanic skills, is this something I could tackle? If so can anyone recommend a good manual?

I rebuilt my T-10 with no problems. Here is a vidio you can buy on how to rebuild a Muncie. You can buy a complete rebuild kit from numerous suppliers. Also, buy the GM shop manual.

Do you have access to a press? You will need to press some bearings on/off. The video is a great guide and walks you through it. The tough part is inspection. How to tell if gears are bad. The 1st time rebuilder will not know what is good and what is not. Take your time fi you want to tackle it and it can be done.

Standards are straight forward. Take lots of pictures with a digital camera. Also use Ziptop plastic baggies to bag and tag everything. What looks so obvious today will look like the first time in 2 months. I have done 1 vette tranny rebuild M-21, 2 Porsche 928 5-speeds, and one Ford AOD-e Auto (never again on an auto) and I'm an accountant with no professional mechanics training. Just patient and I use reference books alot. Like the person prior said the tough part for amatures like us is diagnosing. I tend to replace way more then a pro would replace. The ole' while I'm in here routine.
