So long as the shutoff valve is on the pressure side then yes it will keep fluid from circulating. To be safe though you can install a shutoff valve on the other line, and drain the fluid out during the times that the heater is not used. Even more insurance.

CAN YOU TELL ME HOW TO BYPASS ALTOGETHER? thanks. also if you block off both there wont be pressure will there? AND WHEN YOU DO THIS SHOULD YOU DRAIN HEATER SIDES OF HOSES?

Bypassing completely is not too hard but you'll either need to replace the water pump with one that doesn't have the heater hose nipple or remove the nipple and plug the hole. The other aspect is the intake manifold nipple, which you can remove and replace with a plug. Then just remove the rubber hoses from the heater core, and plug them so nothing gets in.

THANKS, DURANGO, seems like the easiest way is the way you suggested by putting 2 valves, this way it looks like its supposed to also. thats what ill do. when i cut the hose should i drain fluid from hoses that go to firewall side?
