Driving the 82 yesterday noticed around 70mph, rpm's were high realized tramsmission hadn't shifted into 4th gear. Pulled over and stopped leaving in drive tried to take off nothing, put it in park and back to drive ran fine (was close to the house) back up to 70 same thing wouldn't shift into 4th. Once home checked fluid it was fine. Parked it.
Any ideas?
Original transmission? 82 700R4s have issues, could be lots of things. If it has never been serviced, I'd change the fluid and filter. Check to be sure the TCC fuse is good. Is it not shifting into 4th or just not locking the converter in 4th?
Yes original. I've had it a year and never serviced it. Not sure what or where the TCC fuse is. Not sure on the converter question, in the past at 70mph it would run 2000rpm, this time it was running around 3000rpm. Sorry for the lack of knowledge, please educate me.
82 is the first year for the 700R4. The 700R4 is a 4-speed automatic with the 4th gear being overdrive. It also has a locking torque converter. With all conditions right (in 4th gear, light throttle, good vacuum I believe) the computer tells the torque converter to lock by sending a ground. There should be a fuse for TCC or Torque Converter Control to supply the hot. If the converter is not locking then there are several possibilities: bad TCC fuse, bad TCC wiring, bad PROM, bad wiring from the 4th gear switch to the computer, bad TCC solenoid in the transmission, and so on. I would suggest buying a genuine GM 82 shop manual and following the diagnostics. Transmission may be bad internally, but I would try a few things before I threw in the towel.
markdtn thanks for the information. I will have the unit serviced and check the fuse (i assume this fuse is located in the fuse block) and hope for the best.
