I'm needing some advice from the obviously more leaned C3 owners. I own a 73 and am wanting to buy a head shield for the hood. The car originally comes with an air cleaner that has a "collar" that forms a seal with the top of the air cleaner and the hood. Since I bought the car without it's heat shield I'm assuming their was a hole in the shield to accommodate this. I've since replaced the air cleaner with one without the collar. Long story... I know.
Question... would it be prudent to order a heat shield from an earlier model that doesn't accommodate such a design?
The hood insulation from a 76 would probably fit better. 76 did not have cut out for the air cleaner seal, but it was a long hood like the 73. It would cover the inlet from the cowl that used to go into the air cleaner top though.
I don't think I can answer your question correctly as I'm not familiar with the older hood designs. Hopefully someone with more experience will jump in here.
I believe the cowl induction plenum may interfere with the fit of an older insulation mat.
If your lucky enough to get the stock hood to close with the original breather, you may be better to source one and stay with the original style insulator.
It isn't really a heat shield but rather is called "cowl induction." In a nutshell, it delivers cooler and slightly presurized air to the carb at full throttle only. To make it work, the door t the back of the hood needs to be functional (opens at full throttle), you need the correct air cleaner and seals and you need a place where you can use full throttle. There are a number of discusions on the forum about this. try using the search function and see what you find.
The bottom line is that it's hard to say if it makes any difference. it is more of a marketing thing, though a pretty cool one.
