Default General ?'s

Happy Thanksgiving people....
Future owner here wanting to get some knowledge on differentials. I know that c4's have the 44's with the manuals ( except for 84). Can somebody give me the applications for the c3's? I've also read there is a difference from 79 to 80 set-ups including suspension. I will probably be looking at 75 on up due to my funds. Would also like to mod it a little hence my question on diff. strength. This is the best vette forum so I am looking foward to your reply's. Thanks in advance and again happy holidays Mike

Around '80 they switched to an aluminum rearend, which can handle less power.

63-79 IRS differential was built by GM and is pretty strong (L88, LS6, etc.)
80-82 was a Dana 44 and is not as strong

The suspension is similar but the Dana used a different mounting setup so only the GM unit can be used on 63-79 cars without mods and vice versa.

63-79 GM factory ratios: 2.73, 3.08, 3.36, 3.55, 3.70, 4.11, 4.56
80-82 Dana factory ratios: 2.72, 2.87, 3.07
80-82 Dana aftermarket ratios: 3.31, 3.54, 3.73, 3.92, 4.09

Thanks wfo76. Is that the dana 44 that are in the c4's? Also were they just in manual cars or auto's too? Were the iron diff's all the same in the 79's and earlier? Thanks Mike

Not that familiar with C4 but think C3 is different from that used in C4.
C4 I think was Dana 36 for automatic and Dana 44 for manual.
All 80-82 whether auto or 4-speed were Dana 44 but front yoke and u-joint was smaller for auto.
Think the front bracket is a little different 63-65 but definitely all 66-79 units will interchange.
Gary (GTR1999) is the diff specialist and will correct if I am wrong.
