I`m experiencing an inaccurate reading on my fuel gauge. When it`s cold it reads fine. When the car warms up the fuel gauge will drop to 1/4 tank. I`m thinking it`s the fuel sender. Any suggestions?
Thanks....do you feel it might be a good idea to go ahead and replace the gauge? I went out and started the car yesterday to warm it up. The gauge read fine. But, if I take it for a drive, the gauge will eventually give an inaccurate reading. It bounces around for a short time then sits on 1/4.
Maybe the sender is sticking. It's basically just a float on the end of a long pivoted rod. You might be able to see it if you take off the gas cap and shine a flashlight into the tank, and if you can poke a piece of stiff wire in there then you might be able to judge whether it's at all stiff to operate.
But I still think I'd guess a malfunction with the gauge or the connections at the back of the gauge cluster maybe. New gauges are expensive though. You could try driving with a ohmmeter connected to the gauge feed wires to see whether the sender's reading is changing unrealistically or whether it's steady.
Excellent article.....i`m printing it for my records.
I will have to say, since buying my Corvette this forum has been very useful & friendly. Thanks to all.
