It is breaking my heart to ask this question, but I have to ask it anyway. I must sell my 1979 corvette. I need to convert my garage for my mother in law to move in with us. I have no place to put it. It needs lots of work that includes:
New paint.... (body is good)
2 motor mounts need to be replaced
Tranny mount needs replaced also
Entire interior
Brake systems needs to be re done
All bushings need to be replaced
It does run, it starts right up, but I have not driven it much because the broken motor mounts are tweaking the tranny and making a groaning sound. (That is my guess).
Anyway. I paid $4,000 for it, I was help[ing out a family member in financial trouble so I really was not concerned with the price. What should I sell it for? I would like as much of my $4,000 as possible. Is that asking price to high?

Hi Jason,
I know may sound funny coming for a salesman But i would start the car at 5-6K and let people make you an offer. You can never go up in price once you start dealing! If you email me at hobbycarcorvettes@yahoo.com i can send you a list of websites i list cars on for free, or for very little money. Make sure you take as many good pictures as you can of the car.
I would fix the motor and trans mounts before you try to sell it. To me that is a real detractor because you are talking like $60 worth of parts. $4k sounds like good money for a '79 needing paint, interior, and brakes. I'd ask more but be prepared to take less-especially in this economy.
I think it depends on just how bad the interior and body/paint are.
If pretty bad $4,000 sounds like a lot of money considering the mechanical issues as well.
Like Mark said (assuminmg you have some minor mechanical ability) it's worth spending a few hours to at least get the motor mounts and tranny mount fixed.
The less negative stuff you have to explain the better.
Ouch, the double whammy! Mother-in-law moving in, and Vette on the way out.
As others have said, at least repair the mounts so prospective buyers can drive it and evaluate it. Other than that, selling this time of year, w the weather and economy will be a challenge. It should be worth +/- $4k if driveable. Take it and run.
Hopefully you can get another Vette in a year or so.
Secondly, I don't know anything about your personal situation, but if you are selling because you are losing space rather than cash issues, I suggest you look a little harder to find a place to park it.
Even if the car needs a ton, someone will be willing to get into it for $3500-$4k.... its all some people can afford. But, things could change for you suddenly and then you are out there trying to replace what you already had.
Even a well-covered outside spot... or maybe a break on an extra garage bay spot that someone's not using... check into it before you let it go.
i bet if you clean it up and fix the motor mounts and make sure the motor runs good, you could get 5-6k for it.... i bought my 77 for 5k and it needed some work including paint and interior.....

I have to agree. You do have alternatives to selling. The car doesn't sound like it's in mint condition so you don't need something elaborate for the time being. You could even consider putting it into a storage unit for now.

As it said on your profile its your sons. The time spent with your son working in it is priceless. My son is 12 it would break his heart to sell mine. I think you have to exhaust all other options first. Even if you cover it in the yard or one of those insta garages from harbor freight Good Luck Thanks for your service to this great country

I've had my 88' Chevy Pickup stored in one of the instant garages for the last 5 years. It is dark brown in color and hidden by some shrubs so you can't see it from the street. I put down some heavy plastic then cheap particle board over that to keep the moisture down. I bought this truck new in 88' and both my sons have driven it. I restored it a few years ago, and I'm going to give it to my Grandson when he learns to drive (about 5 years away).

$4,000...is that asking price too high?
Yes, much too high to realistically expect any lookers. Sorry, not what you want to hear...but project corvettes from the late '70's are popping up on yards and craigslists everywhere and not selling.
Even a little less ($3750) should drive some interest and help sell the car, but I think it will go for around $2500.
It's interesting, because this is the same crowd that flames the guy looking at the '72 BB, and tells him they would pay $4000 or less for it...
