Default Ideas for a 71' vette.

I'd like to build a torque-asuras rex.
But I would like to keep the weight down.
I prefer to keep a small block, plus they are cheaper to buy parts for.
Im just in search of some fresh ideas.
This baby is gonna be a sleeper.

Thanks, Cheers.

The 400 is known for it's torque. Use slightly longer rods and a cam that is best suited for low RPMs...an RV or truck cam, and you'll have gobs of torque.

If you want more, you might have to get up into big block territory.

You could also try a large displacement small block, like a 434.

How much do those run? Big time coin?

About $3500.00 for the short block with steel crank and forged pistions, then you build from there, but what a sneaky mill, looks like a 350 and runs like a stripped as_ed ape. Sounds pretty good too.

A 415 or 421 is much more reasonable and easier to build than a 434. The 415/421 is just like building a 383 or 396 only with the larger bore of the 400 block. If you have to buy a crank why not go with a stroker anyway.

How about an aluminum LS motor under it and maybe convert to C4 suspension or a tube frame (Obviously depends on your budget). But an LS motor would shred the tires, lighter, and not that difficult to install.

Aren't we running out of good 400 blocks? Haven't they been out of production for 25 years or so?

I got my virgin 400 block out of a salvage yard in Chicago a few years ago for $150. The deals are out there for you to find.

The LS would be a great choice-Only weighs 414lbs and can make lots of power w/ just a cam change and headers. To keep it simple-you can put a carb on it and not have to mess w/ fuel injection. The distributor is as simple as a plug in box from MSD.

Hey Lucy, you got some 'splainin to do!!!!

A virgin block from a salvage yard? Do they go thru a vendor for those virgin blocks? Virgin as in never been torn apart?

Note: I got up very early this morning, and am very tired, so it's not registering right now.

Thanks, BBTank

Yeah the engine was complete, removed from the vehicle, and wrapped. It was never torn into from the day it left the factory so I call that virgin. Never been touched. It was in very good shape, which is the the bonehead who bored it only went to +.020.
