Default Paint

As I was reading Mia's thread on paint, a question came to mind.

Being ignorant of the entire process, I've gotta ask.

Does anyone know just how many coats of primer, paint, and clear is considered a quality paint job? I'm having mine painted fairly soon and I'd like to go into it with a little knowledge under my belt.

Thanks.

The amount of primer varies from the individual painter to each shops procedures, there really is no specific amount of coats per car. Every cars surface irregularities vary so the amount of material used to block sand will vary depending on the attention to detail. A typical production shop base/clear job will use 2 coats base and 2 coats clear. Although certain specialty brands of paint can withstand higher builds of clear to allow additional block sanding.

If your car is white, I would consider a single stage paint in lieu of clear. White is one of the best colors to hide surface irregularities, and a lot of shops will use that to their advantage.

There are several How-To-Paint-Your-Car reference books. Buy a couple and read through them with the intent of not particularly doing it yourself, but getting a background on the process so you and your painter will understand each other when the time comes.

Now that's a good idea.
