Default speedometer cable removal 1972

I am trying to change my speedo cable in my '72. I am pushing on the retaining pin behind the speedometer but the cable doesn't want to seem to come out. Is there a trick to this?

Changed the speedometer cable, finally got the thing off and the new one on, but the speedometer still doesn't work. I thought the cable was the issue, it had been touching the header and burned through, but I just took it for a spin and it didn't work after I replaced the old one. Any ideas what else it could be??

I just saw your post so it is a little late for R&R the speedo cable - but FWIW I have my wife pull on the cable (speedo or tach) in the engine compartment while I reach behind the dash and hold the clip down to unhook the cable. I've never been able to pull on the cable and hold the clip at the same time by myself.

Did you make sure the end of the cable is in the speedometer and the trans good? It should be difficult or impossible to get the cable on either one if the inner cable is not seated properly.

Was the speedo working before you changed the cable?

You might try unhooking the cable from the trans and turn the inner cable while someone is looking at the speedo to see if the needle moves. I've heard people use a drill to spin the cable but you might be able to spin it enough by hand to see if the needle moves (though it won't be very much).

Thanks I will try taking it back off and spinning it. The speedometer worked before, just bounced around a little b/c it wasn't greased. There is a extension cable coming off the transmission that i hooked the new cable to. I am thinking this may be the problem. The cable I bought is longer than the one that came off so I was thinking of bypassing the extension and hooking straight to the trans. to see if that would work. Only thing I can think that may be the trouble.. Thanks for the reply.

Got it working. I discovered the extension on the speedometer cable was trashed. Looks like the line next to the header heated up and froze, in turn locking up the line that went into the transmission. Took out the extension and it works perfect.
