Default what holds them on

The individual CORVETTE letters on the back of the car and the Stingray emblems on the sides. There are small pins on the back of the letters but they aren`t threaded or anything what keeps them from falling back off. thanks Skip

They have little nuts that cut there own threads. They are called speed nuts and they are just stamped sheet metal.

Depending on the year some are held on with double side tape.

Actually the “nuts form hell” were an acorn nut! They were the speed tap type that cut threads when installed.

I have to say that on my car when I installed them the paint in the hole closed it up enough that I installed the letters without the nuts. This way I can pull them out when I wax the car.

In good sense and considering the higher cost of this item now as compared with 15 years ago, I will seriously consider putting the nuts on and advise you to not do this!

I guess I’ve been lucky I’ve never lost one or popped my paint pulling them off to clean. (And if you have used letters, they would have sharp edges on them that would possibly pull the paint). I do catch some grief from my friends for having them this way.

Willcox.

Hey Skip,
From what your saying, there are not any kind of nuts holding either the rear corvette letters or the side stingray emblem. Sounds like all the letters and stingray emblems on the side are still the originals and thats a real good thing. My 70 coupe has alll the letters and one emblem on the passenger side with the studs and no nuts. The driverside has the kind with the speed nut and looks like it's aftermarket. My 70 convertible has all of the long studs with black adhesive on all of the emblems.
The gas cap lids uses the nice chrome acorn nuts.
NCRS states that all the emblems have the stud type with a little black adhesive on the studs and have no nuts.
Hope this helps.

Yeah I don`t think these had any speed nuts on them because there are no threads or marks on the little studs, the car is a 73 by the way. Both the word Corvette and the side emblems that say Stingray are like this. The round front emblem uses the speed nuts. What I am thinking about is on the backside where the small studs come through I am going to use a small bit of RTV to hold the stud against the inside and a small bit of clear RTV on the backside of the letters.
