Ignition switch replacement
My ignition switch is stuck in the #2 position and would not turn back to #1. The release lever seems stuck and messed up. The ignition barrel feels messed up as I am able to pull the key out in the #2 position. It would turn to position 3 but would not crank the engine. I tried shooting some WD40 in the key hole to maybe loosen thing up but to no avail.
I would greatly appreciate insight or advice.
The car is currently stranded at a friend's house. Perhaps can someone tell me how to 'hotwire' the ignition so I can at least drive the car home?

First let's review the terminology. The ignition lock cylinder is the part in the column head where you insert your key. The ignition switch is actually down under the dash, mounted on top of the steering column jacket. Your lock cylinder rotates a plastic gear that engages a small die cast rack. That rack pushes and pulls a rod that reaches down on top of the steering column jacket and actuates the ignition switch.
My first guess would be that your plastic gear or your rack is broken. If you tilt the column all the way up (or down) does that help any? Sometimes the broken pieces may actually come together and work if you tilt the column.
Disconnect your car battery. We don't want the car lurching ahead as you diagnose the problem.
Take the dash panel off from under the steering column. You should see one rod reaching down to the dimmer switch mounted on the side of the steering column. There should be another rod near the top of the column jacket that reaches to the ignition switch. When you rotate your ignition key, you should see the rod moving directly with any key movement. If the key moves and the rod doesn't move, your problem is the lock cylinder, the plastic gear, or the rack.
There are kits available to replace the gear (also known as a sector) as well as the rack. You can also purchase lock cylinders, keys, and ignition switches if you need them.
