I've never dropped the steering box, but pulling the column out is a 45 min job, once you do it. Pulling the steering box at an angle requires removing the pitman arm, that's torqued at 120ft/lbs, min. The column's pretty easy,,If you do these first
Remove Batt cable from batt
Unplug harmonica connector at lower column
1. Remove shift interlock cable from the two points it attach's to the engine side of the column firewall sandwich plate and shift arm. A big flat tip worked for me, on the clip.
2. Remove the two bolts on the pass side of the firewall sandwich plate. Of the 2 threaded studs that remain there, one is a bolt- remove it through the engine compartment, and one is a stud welded to the engine side of the sandwich plate. From inside the engine compartment, rotate the plate ~180° to gain room and clearance, then remove it also.
Other notes,, don't let the column fall on your neck when you remove the 2 last remaining bottom dash hold up bolts,, and when reinstalling it, do so in such a way as to allow it to self align during the several bolt in steps, and not build up and contained stresses.
If you unmount the gear from the frame you should not have to remove the pitman arm to gain sufficient clearance to remove the flexible coupling. BTW I have more answer over on the Tech forum where you also posted.
