Any suggestions for how to get the rear end stampings to show up better so I can document it?

They are so light you really can't see them but you can tell something is there.

Try using chalk. Make sure the surface is clean and rub the chalk across the stamping. Another option would be to place a piece of paper on the stamping and rub a pencil over the paper to see if the outline of the stamping can be seen. I hope this helps. Good luck

Brush on white or yellow paint and completely wipe off paint before it gets a chance to dry. What remains should clearly be your numbers!

If the paint dries before you get a chance to wipe off, use a solvent dampened rag to remove paint on the surface and it should yield the same results.

You can do the same with black or gray paint afterwards to cover up the white/yellow.

Thanks guys, good ideas. I'll give them a try starting with tracing over them with pencil and paper, then chalk and finishing up with paint if those fail.

As you can tell, I'm planning to go from least intrusive to most intrusive to minimize cleanup.

Ok, the chalk worked to a fair degree.

I was able to pick up AW (3.08 gear), W (Warren Motive plant), 33 (julian date but missing one number as the car is an early to mid Dec. 71 build) and E (Eaton supplied gears).

Wish I could see the third digit of the julian date but I can't and February 2nd (33) makes no sense.

Having replaced the trailing arms, it is very difficult for me to believe it isn't the original rear end. Years and years of dirt and rust build up would indicate that if it was changed, it had to be very early on. But then I have to wonder why put a 3.08 rear back in? If I had to replace a rear end, I'd have gone with either 3.70 or 3.90.

By the way, the W for Warren Motive actually looks like a backwards N so I determined it must be a W with the last upward leg missing.

Can anyone add more background to this as far as odd stampings or missing parts/numbers?
