I have been trying to get my speedometer to work with no luck. My previous speedo was seized up and the drive cable was exploded, so I replaced both. Since needle is still not moving, I am guessing that the problem is the gears in the transmission. What would you suggest as the next step? Any advice would be great!
If you can get it on a rack you can see inside the tranny. Have someone turn the rear wheels and the gear will turn so you can see if any teeth are broken. Is it single cable or two piece cruise? I went from cruise to single last week, no more problems.
I installed a 1 piece cable to eliminate any additional problems. When I installed the speedo cable I saw a plastic piece the core slid into. Do I remove this to see the gears you are talking about? Also, do I have to drain the transmission fluid to do this?
Yeah, remove the gear housing with a 7/16 wrench. that will be the cable gear. That's what was originally wrong with mine. Then you'll be able to see inside the tranny to that gear. You don't have to drain the fluid, but I'd go ahead and replace the o-ring on the cable gear housing while you're at it. Easy to find at any hardware store. Also the housing gear is only about 6 bucks at the Chevy dealer, my local one had it in stock, just count the teeth on it. The shaft on a cable gear that old could be worn down and you can't tell unless you mike (sp) it. Even a 1/16 of an inch can cause the teeth to not mesh right and cause a jump in the speedo or possibly break teeth off.
