Default Help me ID my Vette?

I have a 1976 Vette. I am trying to figure out which ID tag goes on my console L48 or L82. I am new to corvettes so I dont know a whole lot. I come from a Ford family so this is the first Chevy I have owned (and the only one).

It was my friends and he died last year and I bought it from his widow, last spring, because she was going to sell it and just couldnt see it going to someone else and she made me a hell of a deal on it. I will try to post some pictures on here to help.

1Z37L6S431383. I have a manual and it really does not say how to check it. Just tells you where it was made and the engine code, where to find the numbers ect...

Welcome to the Corvette world - Nice looking '76. The L in the VIN indicates the 180 net hp L-48.

1972-1980 Corvette VINS are all consistent. You said

1Z37L6S431383

Breaks down as:

1st digit = Division, 1=Chevrolet
2nd Digit = Model, Z=Corvette
3rd & 4th Digit = body style, 37=2 door coupe

So far so good, but the 5th digit is the engine code which is how I would tell. You have written L, but I have two choices for '76s of J=L48 and X=L82, I don't know what an L in that position would mean.

In case you are curious:

6th digit = model year, 6=1976
7th digit = manufacturing location, S=St. Louis
8th digit is always a 4 for 1976s (for reasons I am ignorant of)
The last 5 digits are the serial number for your particular car, like yours was the 31,383rd 1976 Corvette made.

Are you sure that 5th digit is an L?

I think you are probably right, but my notes say J for 1976 and L for 1977. So I did a quick internet search and found this: http://www.vettesite.com/vin.asp

I didn't cite a source for myself in my notes. Lesson=there is a lot of bad info available for free on the internet.

The Black Book shows "L" for L48 and "X" for L82 in 1976.
