My water temp. gauge on my '69 350 hp coupe went out. at the time, the coolant level was 3" low. could this cause the gauge to go out? i recently put a new thermostat in, and don't want to get into the dash, but Im driving it 4 hours to a new home in tucson and am hoping for a quick solution.
Before you assume the gauge went out, first describe what the needle does with both the key on and the key off, and check to make sure the temp sender wire is still connected to the sender in your driver's side cylinder head. The wire is dark green and should have a cloth like sheath wrapped around it.

Usually when the temp gauge isn't functioning properly, the problem is between the sender and the gauge, or the sender itself. The gauge itself does not usually go bad.
About the only thing that will cook the dash unit is a wiring problem in the car. A car low on coolant will not cause any problems with your gauge!
If you have to make a long trip it may be worth investing in a IR gun just to check the car from time to time. If you test a car with one of these, check it at the neck and not the hose! The hose can give off false readings.
