Has anybody ran into this? I'm unsure how to tell if the lever attached to the gas pedal is bent, or what the issue is. I can rev the car manually with the throttle on the carb, but when the gas pedal hits the floor, the carb is only opened half way up - I can only get to 3,000 rpm. I had to replace the accelerator cable to retainer bushing this week and now that is done, this is what I found. I just received the car, so this problem may not be new. The pedal doesn't have much travel before hitting the floor so my guess is that it needs to be engaging earlier by being positioned higher - there is certainly room.
I had this problem when I was using a Qjet accelerator cable bracket with a BG Demon (holley type carb). Do you have a Holley carb? If so, maybe a new bracket would help.
A new Holley 80508S was recently installed. Upon further inspection, it seem that the accelerator lever p/n 3934093 has a half circle shape for the accelerator rod to go through and it is wallowed out, allowing too much travel. It looks like a replacement lever is necessary unless anybody can suggest how to fix this. I like to keep stock parts when I can, expecially when the replacement parts aren't identical, and they don't seem to be for this.
How much slack is in the cable when at idle? If excessive slack the 68 lever is more of a flat shape where the cable attaches, the lever tends to straighten out which limits cable travel. Two ways to fix are rebend the lever to get full travel then weld in a reinforcing piece. The other is to get a 73 accelerator pedal and lever which is round and stronger than the 68 and won't bend.
The 73 pedal assembly bolts right to the 68 mounting bolt locations.
