I just did this on mine. It is a lot easier to remove the door latch assembly when replacing the outside handle. there are 3 bolts holding the latch on and there is no adjustment when putting it back. All of the adjustment is in the rod ends. Just make sure you try closing, opening and lock/unlocking the door before you replace the door panel. If you need to make some fine adjustments, at least you can get to the latch mechanism with the panel off.

You don't HAVE to remove the latch, it just makes getting the to the nuts for the latch a lot esasier to remove and replace.

I think YOU DO HAVE TO REMOVE the latch if your hands are as big as mine are. Otherwise jobs is tedoius and frustrating, much easier and FASTER if you remove the latch (then you can take some time and clean it up and use some Motorcycle Molly chain lube on it to make it work like a champ when your done.) One other tip, find some new clips for the rod from the door handle to the latch and the rods just push right on into the clip when everything is going back together. I was originally told that you had to slide the clip into position with the rod in the hole of the latch by a guy who dosen't know as much as he thinks he does about Vettes. Also NEVER spray lube on any Vette lock/window components while they are in place in the door as they fiberglass will absorb the oversprayed lube and fail! and possbily cause paint failure too!
