I am trying to get a replacement standard steering column for a 73 Vette. I don't want it to be rigged, as I will be re-selling it. Can anyone advise if indeed the 73 column was different... will anything from 68-77++++ fit? thanks
I am not sure how much is not the same but my 69 uses key coded E & H, The 77 I had used codes C & D the grooves on each key were oppisite each other. Also on the 69 the ingnition key works in the doors where as the 77 the square key worked the ignition and the round worked the doors. I'm not sure when what year the change was made.
Any standard column 1969 through 1976 will bolt right in. You may want to remove the lock cylinder from your original 1973 column and swap it into your new column if you want to keep the keys for you ignition and doors the same.
BTW it was the 1974 model year and later where the ignition key was different from the door key.
All GM cars 1967-73 had square keys for the ignition and doors. Round keys for glove, trunk, and console.
I think all 76 year Vettes had the so called "Vega" plastic steering wheel so unless you want to buy a new hub to be able to bolt your steering wheel on the replacement column, stop your search at 1975.
