I'm glassing in a se custom rear bumper on my 78. Some people tell me I need to use a special bondo for the 78 body? Are they right?
Yes you need to use SMC approved fillers such as USC Proglass or Evercoat Panel Adhesive. With the glass material you need an Epoxy Resin, the standard resins that come in the kit will not permanently adhere. If you buy your products at an autobody supply house do not let them tell you it's fiberglass this will work, if it does not specify SMC approved don't trust it. I found out the hard way.
Also, make sure the adhesive you use to glue the bumper to the body is compatible with both SMC (body) and fiberglass (your new bumper) such as SEM 39747. This adhesive is a good choice because it contains glass beads to act as spacers to prevent all the adhesive from squeezing out as you clamp the bumper to the body. You want a very strong adhesive joint to reduce flexing and prevent your seam from cracking as your body work ages.
You should use a real fiberglass bumper, flex glass is not the best foundation for fillers.
Power shift - not to hijack, but that se custom bumper you're putting on - that wouldn't be the one with the twin recessed tail light pockets, would it?
Is this it?

You got it. I got it from Eckler. The top fits good but the sides are about 1/4 of an inch short. I don't have a problem with that cause I want to glass it in so I have no seams. After bolting it in do I have to use fiberglass cloth or can I use that special bondo? What did you do?
