i am working on a 75 vette and was wondering if when i go to jack it up to put jack stands under it so i can get underneath and do some cleaning and painting if there is a certain best way to do this. can you lift the front by placing jack on front crossmember and rear by placing jack on differential. maybe a dumb question just dont want to mess up anything thanks
You really should get a Chassis Service Manual for your year Corvette. Atkbird is right, using the front cross member can dent it. The service manual jacking points are the frame side rails, in the rear just in front of the rear wheel kick up, and in front just before the rails curve in and up for the front suspension. You can also jack under the front lower control arms. The manual shows the frame in front of the front suspension as suitable for jackstands, as well as the frame side rails, same as the jacking points.
I have successfully placed a 2X4 on my floor jack, and carefully positioned it under the front cross member so it engages the edge, and not the middle. Probably not recommended, but if you're careful it works.
Hope this helps!
They also make a head piece for your floor jack that is like a spreader and it extends out to go under the lower control arms right under the coil springs. It lifts the whole front end. I dont have one but a friend does. Im sure Ill be getting one soon.
Have you considered jacking it up and placing ramps under the four wheels. I position the ramps so the sloped surface goes forward in the front and toward the rear in the back leaving center of car wide open. Keeps your entire frame free and clear for cleaning and painting and is supper safe. Only way I spend any amount of time under mine since I don't have room for a lift.
