Default m22 find

Hey guys; I was in attendance at the Multry swap meet this last week, looking for a rebuilt 4 spd for my 427 camaro. One of the sellers there had 2 rebuilt m-22s, one built it the 60s and the other built and installed in 1972. this trans had a corvette vin including the "S" for Saint Louis, serial number, 5,032. I did not say anything to him about it but would this trans be only installed in one of the 20 ZR-1s sold that year. Price was $1,500 firm. I did not buy the trans.

tryconcom,

I'd say your assumption is correct. Pretty rare transmission, it should be worth a few dollars to the owner of vin # 5032.

The NCRS specification Guide shows only 20 (14 coupe and 6 conv) 72's being built with the M22, all of the ZR1s! A rare piece, and quite valuable to the right person!

To my knowledge the M22 was only available with the L88 in 69. The L88's were a regular production option, and as such were not "batch built". I have a friend who has 2 69 L88's and is very up on these cars, I'm not aware of any formal registry, but if I get a chance I'll call him and see what he can tell me.

As far as identifing an L88, original brakes would have been the J56's (no top boss to hold a caliper pin). I believe the dash harness was unique to L88's, since L88's did not have a radio or heater. L88s shared the regular big block radiator, but didn't use a shroud. The body would have a block off plate on the firewall where the heater box would go and a block off plate on gauge bezel where the radio should be. There are other little differences, but none come to mind at the moment.

Good luck with the hunt!

All '68, '69 L-88's, ZL-1's, due to Federal mandated regulations came with heaters, since requirement necessitated working defrosters. The '67 model year was devoid of such.

M22 was L88/ZL1 only, 100 went into L88s and 1 into Rodger Judski's ZL1.

Only that TI was a required option on the L88 but was also required on the L71 and L89 and optional on other engines so TI alone is not enough.

Don't think the 69 L88's used a proportioning valve like the 67 and 68.

L88s may have the letters "HD" in crayon on certain parts.

Here's the J56 caliper:

Good luck!

Default M-22

I have a M-22. Its a 69 or 70 model year big block. Its in my 69 ss 396 el camino.

I actually wouldnt mind trading it for an automatic. I have The big clutch, and flywheel, Steel scattershield, and hurst shifter. it has the big yoke setup.

I rebuilt the tranny about 2 years ago. The tranny has maybe 500 miles. I very rarely get this car out.

If anyone is interested, I could get the numbers off the tranny.

PM me

Corvette Mike
