1982 Speedo--Mechanical or Electronic ???
Hi all,
I usually hang out in the C2 forum, but a friend of mine has an 82 coupe, and his speedometer has never worked since he got the car. Right now, it's in storage. Do the 82 Corvettes have a mechanical speedo driven by a cable, or an electronic one driven by the ECM ???
They are cable driven, from speedometer to trans tail housing. If it has cruise control it has 2 cables, speedometer to the transducer in the engine bay and one from there to the trans.
Yes, definitely there is a cable to the back of the speedometer. And as mooneyd wrote, two cables if you have cruise control. If the speedo is not working at all, cables are the first thing to check.
My speedo ('82) had a decent amount of bounce until got up to some speed, and cruise control did not work (transducer). I replaced the cables and transducer...cc works well now. Speedo still has some bounce. I talked to my local Corvette expert (he runs a Corvette specialty shop...for years), he said that the needle bounce up to around 15-20 mph is very common on these cars.
