Default Removing front emblem

What's the best way to remove the front cross flag emblem on my 79 with the least amount of collateral damage? If memory serves me correct, it has two guide posts for location but was applied with adhesive. Can I use fishing line (filament) and gently work it under the emblem? Do I need to apply some heat like a hair dryer? BTW - I tried the search function, but apparently it's not working at the moment. Any tips on what kind of adhesive and technique to re-apply? Thanks for the help!

just did it myself. it has two prongs that go through the bumper but...its held on with double sided tape. my tape was so old on my 79 that i used a small flat tip screwdriver, under the emblem and using my finger as leverage so it didnt scrape the paint and just lifted the end of the emblem up. the rest came right off leaving crumbled tape behind which scraped off clean with my finger nail. i originally tryed floss, and a thin piece of wire. both broke on me.

Thanks for the info. I just did it - it came off relatively easy. Already sprayed it with airplane stripper and it will be refinished this weekend. Any tips on which double sided adhesive to re-apply it with? The black adhesive that was on the car seemed to be "padded" or a foam strip...

If you have or know someone who has a heat gun. That is the best way to remove lettering and two sided tape.

Hey, I'm from RI. I bought my vette from an old friend in Providence. I've been here in Florida for 30 years. Can't take the cold. I would be dead by now if I had to withstand this winter up there

after you take it off is there any way to clean it and make it look new without paying $40 for a new one?

My front emblem was too far beyond being able to clean it up. I stripped the paint completely off and will refurbish it using Testors model paint. I can't take the credit for this method of redoing the emblems - I saw it in a prior post. Maybe a search will turn it up. I can, however, tell you that it comes out awesome when done. Some people use a toothpick, but I use a very fine model paint brush and use the toothpick for the "tight" areas. Also, be aware that if you're a purist, the red from Testors is a brighter, purer red and not the same shade as what came from the factory. The factory used a darker shade of red. I personally prefer the brighter red - it definitely pops on the emblem.

I'm still hoping someone can give me some advise on what double-sided adhesive I could use when I go to mount it back on

Go to a auto paint supply house or a good auto parts supply store like a NAPA, etc. They should have various widths of double sided emblem tape. It might come in big quanity rolls and you only need a little so you could even visit your local body shop. They might sell you or even give you enough for one emblem.

yeah i just made a thread last week on restoring these emblems using the paint dip and drop method. it much better then forking out $50 plus for an emblem that is a reproduction, and they come out like new!. just make sure you polish that emblem FIRST before you paint. once its painted youll look at it and say...man that chrome doesnt shine as nice as the paint does!

im working on the rear text (1979) emblems now on how to restore those. they may be a bit harder but il see what i can do on it.

the DS tape i used is 3M with the red backing. ebay has a crap load of it.in larger sizes too. you can get it in smaller strips at like pepboys. DONT USE WHITE FOAM TAPE!

My front nose emblem on my 79 is held on with speed nuts, no tape at all. Now you've got me trying to remember whether the orginal emblem I took off was held on with tape or not. The speed nuts work fine though, mine has been on there for about 3 years w/ no problems.

I've got a '74 and mine uses the speed nuts too - no tap or adhesive. It doen't rattle or anything and seems to hold just fine.

I should have tried refurbishing my old emblem, I paid handsomely for a new one.
