Default Numbers Matching... transmission [pic]

We spend a lot of time looking at photos of stamp pads for numbers matching... here's a nice pic I took today of my NM transmission, complete with October date... (LOVE digital cameras)

PS: this is the stuff you do waiting for paint to get done...

vin

Good pics.
Rotation complete.
The thing I noticed about my stamping is it looks a little light toward the end of the vin number. It should have another 2 in it. You can barely make out the top of the missing 2

Thanks... I was standing on my head even more than normal.

Your last digit is very light... but if you look at mine, you can see the top half of the numbers are much heavier/deeper than the bottom. Stamping these must have been clumsy.

Re-stamping a trans must be a neat trick.

Here's one for you - off my 1974 LS4 convertible - sharp forum members will notice that my tranny is stamped for a 73 car - though it has my vin on it...another one of those so called "mistakes" - that isn't....

Did the factory gang stamp happen while the transmission was in the car as it rolled down the assembly?

....it's my understanding that engine and transmission vins were stamped at the same time with the same stamp...which could be another way to distinguish whether an engine is a restamp or not...if the fonts are not the same...they weren't stamped at that same time...

Could have been some reason that it wasn't installed in the 73 car that it was intended for.
Maybe got sent back to Muncie and torn down and then sent back to St Louis.

The engine and trans were stamped at St Louis just before installation by the same person using the same gang stamper.

Now you got my curiosity up. I'll have to check out my engine stamp.

So if the transmission was attached to the motor would the hammer blow be from the side which could explain the unevenness of some of the stamping?

But the fonts on the VINs are usually pretty similar, right? Many pads Ive seen have a font that looks recognizable for the VIN derivative, and these tranny VINs looks similar. Might be harder to tell a difference than you think.

PS... nice going, now Im comparing mine...
