need opinions - my tilt/tel column is out of the car and seems to be in perfect shape. the tilt mechanism works well, the turn signal rod works great, and the key mechanism seems OK. just seems to needs some cleaning. i doubt that it has evern been restored - is there any reason for me to tear it apart for a rebuild?
The most common problem with T&T columns is that four screws that attach the head to the rest of the steering column often become loose. Unfortunately, the best time to evaluate the column for this condition is with the column in the car and the steering wheel installed. What you would be looking for is a general loose feeling up, down, and side to side by gripping the steering wheel rim and loading it in all directions.
If the steering wheel/column felt good before you took it out I guess that I would leave it alone. If there was any looseness that you remember, I would tear it down and tighten those screws.
Complete instructions are posted at www.corvettefaq.com in the Corvette steering section under tilt & telescoping disassembly and repair.
thanks Jim. I have not had the steering column in the car yet (car came to me in pieces) and i will evaluate it soon after dropping the body. If i need to rebuild it, i will use one of your papers Dan
