I am in the air force actually waiting to go to basic training in Texas. While waiting I am working on my baby.. My 1979 Chevrolet Corvette which I am hoping I am going to be driving more than I have in the last 7 years. In the 7 years I have owned the car I have driven the car maybe 1,000 miles a year.. I live in Maine and the car is always covered and garaged.
Anyways.. I have been doing some interior resoration on the car. I have replaced the leather seats and carpet. When I bought the carpet I came with a sound deadener already on it but nothing to deal with the heat. I really didnt care seeing how I live in maine and it doesnt get hot here, now that im going to be stationed down south. Now im worrying about it. The car doesnt have a catalitic convertor, it now has dual out the back however I want to put side pipes on the car.
I talked to george at Willcox corvette yesterday and he told me that I can go to home depot or lowes and but the stuff you wrap around pipes and it will work great.
George is correct... and I did this not only with my 72 coupe but also my 2000 coupe pull the seats and the carpet then clean and vac everything up. Go to Lowe's or Homedepot and get two rolls of the frostking duct insulation and a can of spray adhesive from 3M. Big change with the in cabin heat and also road noise. Very easy and not too time consuming.
I also used that stuff from Home Depot, and it works great. Put 2 layers under the seats and even put it up in the storage compartment (where the t-tops go). It also deadened the sound. I run Flow Master 40's so it's quite loud.
Gregsvette I see you live in Buxton. That is where my family lived a generation or two ago. I am down in Pine Point near OOB. I know what you mean about having no heat! I still may do this for the sound though.
I also used that stuff from Home Depot, and it works great.
I put the Frost King under the carpet of my '81 and helped a friend do his '80 the same way. Excellent heat/sound insulation at a great price! You won't regret it.
Good luck with your Air Force stint. I spent 22 years in the USAF and loved every day of it. During 15 of those years, an '82 Corvette was my daily driver (115,000 miles).
I will benefit from your advice here also... going to Home Depot tomorrow to check it out. is there a top side / bottom side to the frost king? Is it very thick ?
Greg,
I used the same stuff George recommended under my 68 carpet and it made a big difference.
Good luck with Basic Training and thank you for your service to our country.
Be careful, stay safe, and enjoy that Corvette
